Artist's Comments

I just decided on Monday I wanted to take part in the Okami competition, so here is my very rushed entry!
I love Sumi-E, and was inspired by the game's style. What I love most about it is the dynamism the line variation, swirls, and flowing movement gives the image. My first idea was to make a sculpted version of the game style- that is to say, take the 2D image and convert it to 3D. It occurred to me, however, that such an act would be at complete odds with the spirit of Sumi-E, the life, the movement, the emotion. It seemed sort of forced and contrived.
So instead I took the things I loved about the Sumi-E style and tried to put them into this sculpture. I really am not sure it it comes across the way I wanted it to, but I concentrated on line, movement, and spontaneity- trying to give the sculpture the overall movement of an unconscious and intuitive mark- but concentrating on small details in certain areas. I really enjoyed making the sculpture.

She is 12.5" tall, sculpted from polymer clay. The eyes are 100% handmade by myself. She's painted in acrylic.

Im absolutely amazed that you were able to make it balance at such a small connecting point to the base.
The detail is amazing!
The anatomy perfect, pose wonderful.
The fur is terrific.

This is really remarkable! I love it.
Wow. You're stuff always amazes me, and this just takes the cake. What a wonderful piece with a lot of movement. What great balancing skills you have, too! Talk about thought considering you say it was rushed!

"He's gotta be the tragic figure standing in the rain, mourning the loss of his beloved. So down comes the rain, right on cue."
Thanks! It is super reinforced in that area. My armatures are like 16 gauge steel wire, but from the hock down to the bottom of the base the steel wire is inside a totally rigid copper tube so it can't go anywhere. As long as you get some rigidity in, it's actually really easy to balance stuff :)

Sephiroth: Tell me what you cherish most. Give me the pleasure of taking it away.
Cloud: I pity you. You just don't get it at all. There's not a thing I don't cherish! Stay where you belong...in my memories.

"We have doomed the Wolf not for what it is, but for what we have deliberately and mistakenly perceived it to be.. the mythologized epitome of a savage, ruthless killer.. which is in reality no more than a reflexed image of ourself."
It just turned up in my messages page, under "Hot Topics"

Now I understand that it is about a foot tall, but still, how did you get the teeth and nails to be so perfect and pointy, and get them into their proper places?
